THE Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA) is encouraging the wider community to do the right thing around the Barwon River and dispose of rubbish responsibly.<\/p>\n
The statement from the CCMA comes after a “troubling” discovery late-last month with an abundance of rubbish left behind on the bank of the Barwon River along the walking trail.<\/p>\n
“We encountered a troubling example of littering that highlights a serious issue,” the CCMA said in the statement.<\/p>\n
“Every week, we find rubbish along the Barwon River walking trail, and today’s (September 24) discovery included items like cooking oil drums that have unfortunately entered the river.<\/p>\n
“Improper disposal of waste is not just illegal; it harms our environment and wildlife.<\/p>\n
“When our team has to clean up industrial waste, we divert resources that could be used for maintaining and enhancing our natural spaces.”<\/p>\n
In addition to the Barwon River, the CCMA also cares for all waterways flowing from the Barwon River Basin, the Otway Coast Basin, the Lake Corangamite Basin and the Moorabool River Basin.<\/p>\n
The CCMA also handles integrated catchment management (ICM), which is the coordinated management of land, water and biodiversity resources and includes consideration of environmental, cultural, social, recreational, and economic values.<\/p>\n
“Let’s educate ourselves and others about proper waste disposal and work together to protect our rivers and parks,” the statement continued.<\/p>\n
“Every small action counts. If you see any dumped rubbish along the Barwon River through Geelong, please contact us.”<\/p>\n
