{"id":105252,"date":"2024-10-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=105252"},"modified":"2024-10-09T21:11:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T10:11:31","slug":"13th-and-jan-juc-secure-national-final-honours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/13th-and-jan-juc-secure-national-final-honours\/","title":{"rendered":"13th and Jan Juc secure National Final honours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL boardriding clubs 13th Beach and Jan Juc have qualified for the Australian Boardriders Battle National Final after strong performances in the state qualifying round at Phillip Island.<\/p>\n<p>13th Beach claimed a second place to Peninsula Surfriders, while Jan Juc finished in third place to book its first ever shot at showcasing its skill on the national stage.<\/p>\n<p>Eight clubs competed in the state qualifying event including hosts Phillip Island, Otway Boardriders, South Coast, Bass Coast, and Torquay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/0F3A5483_final_NC_60812.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jan Juc Boardriders power surfer Cooper Downes helped guide his club to its first National Final. Photos: NOAH CLIFFORD\/SURFING VICTORIA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After making the national final of the event earlier this year, Torquay was unable to lock in a spot at the Grand Final extravaganza, finishing third in its semi-final.<\/p>\n<p>Peninsula Surfriders kicked off the final in the manner it wished, with strong surfing from open men&#8217;s surfers Pedro Lani and Lucas Hickson.<\/p>\n<p>However, Phillip Island hit its straps when former Australian junior champion Codie Jeffrey found a bomb wave and secured a 7.17 ride.<\/p>\n<p>13th Beach played a game of consistency, with each surfer playing their role and adding to the team&#8217;s score.<\/p>\n<p>Power surfer Jack Bassett led by example and found some strong scoring potential to elevate 13th into second place as the buzzer sounded.<\/p>\n<p>Jan Juc was in a tight battle with Phillip Island to gain the last qualifying spot.<\/p>\n<p>Jan Juc&#8217;s junior surfer Dom Kellett leapt out of the gate using his youthful energy to make up time and pick up a great score with time running out.<\/p>\n<p>With good heat time-management and consistent scores from then onwards, Jan Juc secured third place.<\/p>\n<p>Peninsula put the icing on the cake of its victory when female surfer Sara Hickson scored a huge 8.33-point ride.<\/p>\n<p>Hickson not only propelled her team to victory but was awarded the Boost Mobile Wave of the Day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/DSC03789_Qrt1_NC_60872.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eight clubs competed in the Victorian qualifier for the Australian Boardriders Battle National Final.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was pretty nervous paddling into that wave but I was able to pull it together and managed to get a couple good turns in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The club&#8217;s energy is so good, winning with PSC is just amazing.
