A PROBUS Club in Geelong will be hoping to sign up some new members next week as part of a worldwide celebration of the organisation.<\/p>\n

Probus Month celebrations, in line with the United Nations Day of Older Persons, began on October 1.<\/p>\n

Throughout this month, thousands of retirees across Australia will celebrate community and companionship in Probus at events including special morning and afternoon teas, lunches, themed parties and picnics.<\/p>\n

The Combined Probus Club of Belmont is one of these, and will run a promotional day at the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre on Friday, October 25 from 10am to 3pm.<\/p>\n

Club vice-president Sue O’Shea said the idea was to promote the club and attract new members during Probus Month.<\/p>\n

“We have been active in the Belmont area for 29 years, with next year being our 30th anniversary,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We will be situated at the entrance of the centre near Priceline, Commonwealth Bank and near Coles supermarket.<\/p>\n

“There will be members in attendance plus a free raffle to attract people to our table.”<\/p>\n

Probus is a social network of clubs that exist to help retirees stay engaged and connected within their local communities.<\/p>\n

Its purpose is to provide opportunities for retirees and semi\u00ad-retirees to come together to make new friends and participate in a wide range of activities, designed to keep their minds and bodies active.<\/p>\n

Since the establishment of the first Probus club in Australia in 1976, Probus has helped thousands of retirees stay engaged and connected.<\/p>\n

Probus clubs are non-political and non-fundraising and offer a built-in network of like-minded individuals who are eager to share their time, experiences and companionship.<\/p>\n

Regular meetings, birthdays and events provide ample opportunities to forge new friendships and maintain a vibrant social life during retirement.<\/p>\n

Probus clubs are associated with the Rotary movement, and some people are members of both a Probus club and its sponsoring Rotary club.<\/p>\n

However, Probus clubs are self-governing once they are formed and, unlike Rotary clubs, do not raise money or provide sponsorships.<\/p>\n
