{"id":106831,"date":"2024-11-07T12:19:04","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T01:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/choosing-tafe-as-the-next-step\/"},"modified":"2024-11-07T12:21:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T01:21:01","slug":"choosing-tafe-as-the-next-step","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/choosing-tafe-as-the-next-step\/","title":{"rendered":"Choosing TAFE as the next step"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AS THE 2024 school year starts to come to a close, many students are considering their study options for next year, exploring TAFE as a direct route to industry and university.<\/p>\n<p>Billy Keller&#8217;s passion for everything design related led him to studying graphic design at The Gordon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;TAFE was an ideal alternative approach to starting out my design career, rather than just heading straight to university,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It provided me with the practical skillset and industry-required knowledge, which first year of university did not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149773\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-149773 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Billy-Visual-Arts-3_92405.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During his time at The Gordon, Billy Keller was able to gain a practical skillset and industry required knowledge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Keller, now a freelance designer, was able to gain real-world experience quickly through the fast-tracked pathway followed by a university qualification in a shorter time frame.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The diploma took me a year to complete at TAFE. After that, I was able to go straight into my bachelor at uni and finish it in two years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Through the TAFE course Mr Keller received hands-on experience, learning essential tools and programs used in the industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149775\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-149775\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Billy-Visual-Arts-1_92444.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keller received hands-on experience throughout his TAFE course, learning about the different programs used in the industry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The practical course helped his success in an industry that values experience and skill combined with his theory-based learning at university.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In design, you need extensive knowledge of programs like Adobe, Figma, and Miro, as well as strong communication skills to present your ideas to clients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Gordon was the perfect gateway into shaping my career. Had I gone to university first, who knows of I would be in this position.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tet Kelly, Mr Keller&#8217;s design teacher, said portfolio building is key.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At TAFE, you&#8217;re not just learning the software, you&#8217;re applying it to create real-world projects that demonstrate your abilities to future employers.
