{"id":106953,"date":"2024-11-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=106953"},"modified":"2024-11-14T15:47:09","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T04:47:09","slug":"geelong-stops-to-remember-the-fallen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/geelong-stops-to-remember-the-fallen\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong stops to remember the fallen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Geelong community paused and remembered those who gave their lives in times of war on Tuesday this week to mark Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n<p>Services took place across the Geelong region, including in Lara where community members wore poppies and congregated at the local RSL for proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister and Corio federal member Richard Marles and Lara MP Ella George were among the crowd of 200 people who paid tribute.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/11\/thumbnail_image2_62792.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"597\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deputy Prime Minister and Corio federal member Richard Marles paying his tributes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lara RSL president Marcus McEwan said the ceremony was well attended and veterans were honoured in a respectful manner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was definitely a huge success for us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To have Richard there too was a great boost.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Last year we only had 40 make it to the service, so to get 200 this year was massive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing the crowd showed me people still want to take part in the Remembrance Day tradition. Gladly it continues to be very important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year marked 106 years since conflict on the Western Front ended in World War I.<\/p>\n<p>Remembrance Day was first held in 1919, when it was originally named Armistice Day, a year after armed conflict during World War I formally came to an end on November 11, 1918.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Geelong community paused and remembered those who gave their lives in times of war on Tuesday this week to mark Remembrance Day.
