{"id":107243,"date":"2024-11-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=107243"},"modified":"2024-11-20T16:41:17","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T05:41:17","slug":"food-truck-opens-up-possibilities-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/food-truck-opens-up-possibilities-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Food truck opens up possibilities for students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW, mobile food truck teaching secondary school students valuable lessons in work ethic is hitting the road.<\/p>\n<p>The Bittersweet food truck, a MacKillop Education initiative run by senior students, will start setting up shop across Greater Geelong, expanding student practical employment skills and providing the community with quality food and drinks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/11\/IMG_1388_99870.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bittersweet food truck, a MacKillop Education initiative run by senior students, will commence setting up shop around the greater Geelong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MacKillop Education Geelong co-principal Skye Staude said the caf\u00e9 and food truck provide a unique way to for students to learn subjects like maths and English.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Measuring, weighing and ordering ingredients help kids build numeracy skills, while planning menus develops market research experience and improves literacy skills,&#8221; Ms Staude said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Working as a team also helps develop social and problem-solving abilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bittersweet food truck is the extension of a clever initiative that launched at the MacKillop Education school in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The original idea of a Bittersweet caf\u00e9 inspired senior students to engage in learning by launching a small school caf\u00e9 to cater to fellow students and teachers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/11\/IMG_1410_38133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Senior student Lana Gilmour, VET trainer Glenn O\u2019Shaughnessy and education support worker Sam Tapper inside the Bittersweet mobile food truck.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following the caf\u00e9&#8217;s success last year, the Bittersweet team set its sights on a bigger dream \u2013 to take its caf\u00e9 on the road with a menu of tasty treats and drinks prepared for the local Geelong community.<\/p>\n<p>The food truck will become a regular feature at a variety of local sites, including and not limited to the Bellarine Living and Learning Centre at Whittington with further plans to expand.<\/p>\n<p>Given the project is aligned to the Victorian Education and Training (VET) Cookery and Workplace Skills certificates, senior students can complete a range of certified industry courses, such as barista training, food handling and safety, and first aid to help with future training or employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/11\/IMG_1422_66700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MacKillop director community engagement Sam Patterson leads the truck&#8217;s launch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best thing about Bittersweet is that it gives the students self-worth,&#8221; Ms Staude said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The look on their faces when they are proud of a product they have made or delivered is priceless, and that is what we are trying to teach these students; to have self-confidence, to know they can make a difference to other people&#8217;s day.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW, mobile food truck teaching secondary school students valuable lessons in work ethic is hitting the road.
