DISABILITY service provider genU has this month hosted the 21st edition of its Big Night Out, a themed evening of costumes, dancing and celebrating diversity.<\/p>\n

This year’s event, held at The Pier in Geelong, saw more than 200 attendees come together dressed as “iconic Australians” such as The Wiggles, Shane Warne and the Irwin family.<\/p>\n

The festivities began with a performance by genU’s Drama Stars to a medley of classic Australian anthems, and a rendition of John Farnham song You’re The Voice<\/em> by MC Luke Maher.<\/p>\n

genU chief executive officer Clare Amies said the event had become a much-loved tradition for clients, corporate partners and employees.<\/p>\n

“This is our night of nights to celebrate inclusivity, diversity and accessibility in a ‘Big’ way.<\/p>\n

“While these are a core focus for us in the work we do every day, it’s important to hold events for people with disability who may not get the opportunity to take part in such a large event like Big Night Out.<\/p>\n

“Seeing them in their colourful costumes, having a wonderful time on the dance floor, enjoying each other’s company, mingling with old friends and making new ones, and creating special memories is what the night is all about and why it continues to be so popular with our community.”<\/p>\n

The event is hosted each year with the vital support of corporate partners, who enable genU to offer heavily subsidised tickets and ensure the event remains both affordable and accessible for people with disability.<\/p>\n

First held in 2003, the Big Night Out has this year celebrated its 21st anniversary.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Select Architects, whose Geelong office is located in Myer Street, has just had its 13th Big Night Out as a corporate partner.<\/p>\n

“We love it every year, and for two months before the event, the key topic of conversation is around costume ideas and how they can be co-ordinated, while also reminiscing on previous years’ efforts,” managing director Peter Serra said.<\/p>\n

“Times are pretty tough for everyone in the sector at the moment and the Select team thought what better way to show our support than to throw ourselves wholeheartedly into the celebration of what genU do for their amazing community.”<\/p>\n

Ms Amies said genU was grateful for the support.<\/p>\n

“It’s great to see businesses valuing inclusion and playing a position role in their workplaces,” she said.<\/p>\n
