{"id":107834,"date":"2024-12-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=107834"},"modified":"2024-12-04T16:48:06","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T05:48:06","slug":"thousands-celebrate-as-deakin-turns-50","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/thousands-celebrate-as-deakin-turns-50\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands celebrate as Deakin turns 50"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COMMUNITY members flocked to Deakin University on Friday last week as it marked the beginning of its 50th birthday celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,500 staff, students, alumni and the wider Deakin community turned out for the event at the Waurn Ponds campus, which hosted a community festival.<\/p>\n<p>Food trucks, live entertainment and family-friendly activities including a live DJ, face painting, and an animal farm kept festival goers busy throughout the evening.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/12\/Deakin50festival__84944.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"902\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The community festival ended with a fireworks display.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A fireworks display amazed crowds as it finished off the event.<\/p>\n<p>The community festival marked the first event of a year of celebrations for the university.<\/p>\n<p>As a way of marking the milestone, the university is also sharing a range of anniversary stories on its website, highlighting where its research and education began.<\/p>\n<p>Staff, students, alumni, researchers and partners are encouraged to also share their memories of Deakin and how their past or present connection has made a difference.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/12\/Deakin50festival_87699.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"632\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eva MacQueens was shown a chicken by Paton from Funfarm 2U as part of the celebrations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deakin got its start at the Waurn Ponds campus, where the Royal Assent was granted for the university to be established in December 1974.<\/p>\n<p>It was officially opened in 1978 and within its first decade became the first university nursing school to open in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>50 years later, more than 350,000 graduates from 13 schools and four faculties have made their way through Deakin.<\/p>\n<p>The university now has four campuses within Australia including Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront, Warrnambool and Burwood.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, head to 50years.<a href=\"http:\/\/deakin.edu.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deakin.edu.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COMMUNITY members flocked to Deakin University on Friday last week as it marked the beginning of its 50th birthday celebrations.
