{"id":108333,"date":"2024-12-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=108333"},"modified":"2024-12-11T22:38:28","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T11:38:28","slug":"vision-australia-visits-geelong-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/vision-australia-visits-geelong-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Vision Australia visits Geelong Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARTICIPANTS at Preschool Story Time at Geelong Library on Friday last week were joined by some special visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Vision Australia partnered with the library to host the event, reading stories and completing activities with seeing eye dogs Margo and Uft in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Through the partnership and interactive activities, children and families were able to gain a fresh perspective on inclusivity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/12\/Image4_05599.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"933\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Throughout the morning children were able to explore braille books and complete a hands on activity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Regional Libraries chief executive officer Vanessa Schernickau said it was invaluable to have Vision Australia involved in the day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their expertise and tactile resources, like brail books and touch-and-feel learning materials, allowed us to provide a unique experience we wouldn&#8217;t normally have access to.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also helped us learn how we can make our libraries more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the story time session, children experienced Braille book readings, a hands-on tactile nursery rhyme activity and the highlight of the day, meeting the seeing eye dogs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/12\/Image3_05577.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"501\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The partnership also enabled the library to to learn how to make the space more inclusive and welcoming.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Schernickau said the children had a fantastic time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They were fascinated by how the seeing-eye dogs behaved differently when their harnesses were removed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They also loved the tactile nursery rhyme book, trying to guess the songs based on the objects on the page.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To see coming events at Geelong Regional Libraries, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/grlc.vic.gov.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grlc.vic.gov.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PARTICIPANTS at Preschool Story Time at Geelong Library on Friday last week were joined by some special visitors.
