{"id":108475,"date":"2024-12-16T09:10:05","date_gmt":"2024-12-15T22:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/first-nations-groups-denounce-geelong-council-move-to-acknowledge-australia-day\/"},"modified":"2024-12-16T09:10:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-15T22:10:05","slug":"first-nations-groups-denounce-geelong-council-move-to-acknowledge-australia-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/first-nations-groups-denounce-geelong-council-move-to-acknowledge-australia-day\/","title":{"rendered":"First Nations groups denounce Geelong council move to acknowledge Australia Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL First Nations groups have condemned the City of Greater Geelong\u2019s decision to return to celebrating Australia Day on January 26, with one prominent organisation calling the move \u201cdevastating\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The motion, which was put forward by Cr Eddy Kontelj and seconded by Cr Trent Sullivan on Tuesday last week, will overturn the city\u2019s May 2023 decision to stop referring to January 26 as Australia Day.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking outside the city\u2019s Wurriki Nyal civic precinct last Wednesday, representatives from the new First Nations advocacy group Be Tru 2 Uluru criticised the move as \u201ca complete backflip\u201d on the \u201cstrong, vocal support\u201d given by the council last year when it unanimously voted to alter how the city approached the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil had, prior to this action, been building a strong relationship with First Nation organisations and communities, a relationship that has a 30-year history and a relationship that accumulated in council being one of the first local government\u2019s signatories to the Uluru Statement from the Heart,\u201d the group said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97477\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-97477\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/DSC04003-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Geelong councillor and prominent Be Tru 2 Uluru member Sarah Hathway addressed protestors ahead of last Tuesday&#8217;s council meeting. Photo: ELLIE CLARINGBOLD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members of Be Tru 2 Uluru were among the protestors to attend last week\u2019s council meeting, rising to their feet and turning their back in opposition to Cr Kontelj while he put forward the motion.<\/p>\n<p>Citing concerns about the council\u2019s ability to \u201cmake informed decisions that are fair and inclusive for First Nation People and all communities\u201d, the group promised to pursue the matter with the Minister for Local Government.<\/p>\n<p>The Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) said it was \u201cdevastated\u201d by the Geelong council\u2019s move, describing the decision as a \u201cbewildering step backwards\u201d that has \u201ccaused great hurt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is beyond belief that the council this week voted to recognise and celebrate Australia Day with events and citizenship ceremonies, with no consultation prior to the vote,\u201d the organisation said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/Untitled-design-64_16334.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cr Kontelj put forward the motion last week, which was supported seven votes to four, stating the move was not intended to be disrespectful and his own support last year for the city to cease acknowledging Australia Day was ill-informed.
