ALFRESCO dining on Geelong’s Little Malop Street has just got bigger, with the City of Greater Geelong trialling an expansion of the area to attract more customers and create a more vibrant culture.<\/p>\n

Vehicles are currently restricted by automated bollards on Little Malop Street between Dennys Place and Shorts Place.<\/p>\n

Since December 6, 14 businesses within this stretch of the street have been able to extend their outdoor dining zone between their facades and existing alfresco areas.<\/p>\n

Pedestrians retain access to the central shared zone.<\/p>\n

The Summer in the Laneways \u2013 Little Malop Street West Outdoor Dining Trial is proposed to end on March 11, 2025, after the Labour Day long weekend.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the trial, traders will have the opportunity to test several outdoor dining settings by creating different, attractive and pedestrian-friendly experiences.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the trial area stretched 56 metres and 14 businesses had received an invitation to participate, with in-principle support from stakeholders.<\/p>\n

“We’re excited to take advantage of summer trading and the Christmas period with this new trial that’s aimed at enhancing the laneway’s culture and giving local businesses a boost,” Cr Kontelj said.<\/p>\n

“We look forward to seeing the outcomes of this trial, which is in response to traders’ requests to increase their alfresco areas.”<\/p>\n

Cr Ron Nelson said the Little Malop West End was a special precinct with delicious food and drink, interesting shops and galleries, and colourful street art.<\/p>\n

“We recognise that this laneway is distinctive and a real favourite among visitors, and that more can be done for the space to reach its full potential,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The City team has an action plan in place to ensure the trial is continually monitored.”<\/p>\n

He said the City was also inviting feedback from visitors to the area, who could head to the its Have Your Say page at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au\/SSLMSWODT<\/a><\/p>\n

A review will be carried out when the trial ends, along with a review of the restricted access trial. The reviews will offer recommendations on whether the trials should be made permanent and how it would work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
