{"id":108761,"date":"2024-12-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-25T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=108761"},"modified":"2024-12-18T21:16:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T10:16:44","slug":"epa-urge-environmental-vigilance-over-festive-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/epa-urge-environmental-vigilance-over-festive-period\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA urge environmental vigilance over festive period"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL businesses and construction sites closing for the festive period are urged to make sure they have properly secured their site, facilities and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>EPA Victoria say factories, warehouses, construction sites and many other businesses will need to take steps to make sure their facilities do not pose an environmental risk.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental body has been in frequent contact with the construction industry and has published a civil construction, building and demolition guide.<\/p>\n<p>This will help builders and land developers manage their environmental and public health obligations including:<\/p>\n<p>Noise and vibration \u2013 scheduling works, community consultation, managing noise and vibration at the source, and managing noise using offsite controls<\/p>\n<p>Erosion, sediment and dust \u2013 managing stormwater flows, minimising dust, managing stockpiles and working within waterways<\/p>\n<p>Contaminated land and groundwater \u2013 identifying presence of contaminated land, and preventing contamination of stormwater and groundwater<\/p>\n<p>Chemical storage and handling \u2013 managing storage and handling of liquid and solid chemicals, spill response and cleanup, and managing volatile liquids, and<\/p>\n<p>Waste \u2013 managing different types of waste, storage, collection, transport and removal<\/p>\n<p>EPA chief executive officer Lee Miezis said businesses should take all the necessary steps to prevent pollution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This means taking the necessary steps to ensure machinery is properly turned off, chemicals are properly stored and there are no leaks escaping the site to stormwater drains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also means security and fire management systems such as alarms and sprinklers are working and firewater containment systems are operational.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Building sites should also be managing any litter they create.
