STRONG defensive pressure from the UC Capitals has resulted in a 20-point loss for Geelong United over the weekend, going down in Round 10 of the WNBL.<\/p>\n
Taking the court at Canberra’s AIS Arena on Sunday, the two teams battled it out during the back and forth match.<\/p>\n
The fast-paced game saw the Capitals take the first quarter, finding their rhythm quickly and showcasing their defensive skills, making it hard for Geelong to score.<\/p>\n
United started to make up some ground in the second quarter, before a string of fouls coupled with good defence and offence from the Capitals resulted in a 45-35 halftime score.<\/p>\n
Geelong looked towards a comeback following the main break, scoring some points, but UC’s defence proved to be too strong, causing a final score of 89-69.<\/p>\n
Geelong United coach Chris Lucas said the most frustrating thing about the game for him was forcing Canberra to have 30 turnovers and missing six “butt-naked layups” in the first quarter.<\/p>\n
“Our execution at times fell away and they were running down our throats, we had 30 more shots than them, but they executed a little bit better than we did.<\/p>\n
“A little bit frustrating, because I want the team to get some reward, but we’re just giving up far too many points right now.”<\/p>\n
United captain Keely Froling put in a 17-point effort during the game, with the former Canberra player saying the court and arena were amazing.<\/p>\n
“The Canberra crowd is always great, it’s great to see so many jerseys there and familiar faces back when I was playing, so it’s definitely pretty special.”<\/p>\n
Geelong United played Southside on Wednesday this week and will face Perth Lynx this Sunday, January 12 in the team’s first home game since early December.<\/p>\n
