{"id":110055,"date":"2025-02-06T04:00:27","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T17:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=110055"},"modified":"2025-02-06T04:00:27","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T17:00:27","slug":"geelong-rainbow-festival-cancelled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/geelong-rainbow-festival-cancelled\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong Rainbow Festival cancelled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE 2025 edition of the annual Geelong Rainbow Festival will not go ahead next week, with organisers citing limited resources and stretched finances among the reasons for the beloved event&#8217;s cancellation.<\/p>\n<p>The festival was set to take place on Saturday, February 15 at Johnstone Park, but Geelong Rainbow took to social media last week to announce that due to &#8220;circumstances out of [its] control&#8221;, the organisation was unable to deliver a festival it felt worthy of the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hung on and tried\u2026 as much as we could to make the festival happen,&#8221; president Dean Cardigan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will keep striving towards our goals \u2013 we&#8217;re always open for suggestions \u2013 but\u2026 we do as much as we can, with who we have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cardigan remains optimistic the festival will return next year and encouraged interested community members to get involved with the organisation to help make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A wise person once told me &#8216;The world is run by those who show up&#8217;,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/338378431_1319509364_29091.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"899\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community members eager to see the festival return next year are encouraged to get involved with Geelong Rainbow to help make it happen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We just need to plan even further ahead and get all our cards ready to play the best hand we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The organisation will instead gather on Saturday, February 8 to rally for the rights of young trans people as part of a National Day of Action organised by the Trans Justice Project.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the Queensland government&#8217;s decision last week to halt hormone therapy access to new trans patients under the age of 18 while it undertakes a review into their usage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This weekend is all about coming together, showing we are unified, showing that we should treat our queer, transgender, diverse young people with respect and love,&#8221; Cardigan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gender-affirming healthcare saves lives.
