SAFETY concerns have led to the immediate closure of a North Geelong waste facility.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued on Wednesday (March 5) evening, City of Greater Geelong chief executive Ali Wastie confirmed the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre and Transfer Station in Douro Street, North Geelong will remain closed until further notice.<\/p>\n
It follows a building condition report that identified structural issues at the site.<\/p>\n
An investigation into these concerns is currently underway and, at the time of writing, the city is unable to estimate when the centre may reopen to the public.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo ensure the safety of all customers, staff and contractors, we have closed the facility pending further investigations,\u201d Ms Wastie said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are currently investigating all of the issues and communicating with all impacted staff and contractors as a first priority.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the site\u2019s immediate closure is a challenging decision, community safety is our highest priority, and we will not compromise.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appreciate the patience and understanding of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the North Geelong facility remains closed, the Drysdale Resource Recovery Centre in Becks Road and the Wyndham Transfer Station in Wests Road, Werribee will continue accepting waste as usual.<\/p>\n
Ms Wastie said garden organics, soil and rubble can also be disposed of at other locations with 15km of the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, including Transformer Metals in North Geelong, Green Care Mulching in Moolap and Fyansford Waste Disposal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
