THE Liberals have made a play for the sporting vote in Corangamite ahead of the federal election, announcing $898,000 towards better netball courts in Grovedale if they form government.<\/p>\n
The election commitment would go towards the $948,000 cost of upgrading the courts used by Grovedale Football and Netball Club at Burdoo Reserve.<\/p>\n
Formed in 1947, Grovedale Football Netball Club has more than 1,000 players across football and netball, ranging from juniors to seniors.<\/p>\n
In September 2024, the Burdoo Reserve netball courts were deemed non-compliant because of an increased risk profile due to higher levels of congestion on the team-bench sideline.<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon later announced Grovedale would play all its netball games indoors at the neighbouring Grovedale Secondary College stadium in 2025.<\/p>\n
Announcing the funding today (Thursday, March 6), Liberal candidate for Corangamite Darcy Dunstan said the funding would deliver safe, compliant netball courts so that Grovedale\u2019s young girls and women could return to their home courts.<\/p>\n
“With more than 400 netball players, the club plays a vital role in keeping kids and adults active and engaged in sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut without safe and compliant courts, our local netballers have been left without a home. This funding will fix that and secure the future of netball in Grovedale.<\/p>\n
“When we invest in local sport, we\u2019re investing in stronger communities, healthier families and better outcomes for everyone \u2014 from kids playing their first game to senior players and volunteers who give so much to their club.”<\/p>\n
Grovedale Football Netball Club netball president Kelly McCarthy welcomed the announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been six years of effort and uncertainty since our courts were decommissioned, so getting this funding means we can get back to our home courts and be confident of our future,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Thanks to Darcy for listening and for fighting for this important project.\u201d<\/p>\n
Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson said Mr Dunstan was a strong advocate for community sport and grassroots clubs such as Grovedale.<\/p>\n
“Darcy Dunstan is exactly the kind of local representative Corangamite needs \u2014 passionate, proactive and ready to fight for the investments that matter to our community.<\/p>\n
“Darcy knows that without proper infrastructure, clubs like Grovedale simply can\u2019t survive.<\/p>\n
