{"id":112333,"date":"2025-03-21T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=112333"},"modified":"2025-03-19T16:51:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T05:51:13","slug":"superboats-roar-in-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/superboats-roar-in-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Superboats roar in Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SOME of Australia&#8217;s fastest powerboats hit the water in Geelong over the weekend as the Offshore Superboat Championships returned to the region.<\/p>\n<p>Held on March 15 and 16, Round 3 of the championships featured 18 boats ranging from ski boats through to Supercat Extremes, which can exceed 130 miles an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Offshore Powerboat Club Commodore Antony de Fina said while drizzly weather impacted crowds on Sunday, there was a large number of supporters on Saturday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/03\/AOPC3_Geelong_Superc_33360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">18 boats competed in Round 3 of the Offshore Superboat Championships.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really lucky to be able to race in Geelong, right in the middle of the city with the beautiful Corio Bay there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Saturday was an absolutely fantastic day; beautiful weather, lots and lots of people around, with some big crowds watching the event,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was probably one of the busiest days we&#8217;ve seen down there with a number of people around, so it was an absolutely fantastic day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The championships run for five rounds, taking drivers right across Australia as part of the national series.<\/p>\n<p>Mr de Fina said the series is only held at five venues around the country, with Geelong being one of them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/03\/AOPC3_Geelong_222_AC_33432.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crowds gathered along the Geelong Waterfront to watch the boats in action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a paid profession, it&#8217;s a hobby, but very passionate people, world-class drivers and the best equipment and set up and the best drivers you&#8217;ll see anywhere in the world, race here in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Australian racers are very, very highly regarded around the world in terms of their skill and boat knowledge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/03\/AOPC3_Geelong_Boost__33354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boats were still able to race on Sunday, despite rainy conditions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Channel Seven were in attendance for the racing, filming the day for a program that will air on 7Mate in around five weeks&#8217; time highlighting everything that happened across the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Mr de Fina said they were lucky to get the exposure from the series and it was a great opportunity for them.<\/p>\n<p>Information on an exact airing date will be posted to the Offshore Superboat Championships &#8211; Australia social media pages.<\/p>\n<p>For more information and results, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/superboat.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">superboat.com.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SOME of Australia&#8217;s fastest powerboats hit the water in Geelong over the weekend as the Offshore Superboat Championships returned to the region.
