{"id":112467,"date":"2025-03-24T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=112467"},"modified":"2025-03-20T10:52:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T23:52:32","slug":"wheels-turning-for-proposed-tyre-recycling-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/wheels-turning-for-proposed-tyre-recycling-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Wheels turning for proposed tyre recycling facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>USED tyres will be given new life through an initiative at the Geelong Refinery.<\/p>\n<p>Viva Energy has taken the first step toward developing a tyre-recycling facility that would have the capacity to process up to 80,000 tonnes of used tyres per year.<\/p>\n<p>It means tyres would be diverted from landfill and contribute to the manufacture of lower-carbon fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Viva has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian resource recovery and advanced recycling business Klean Industries to collaborate on a pre-feasibility study for the establishment of the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Klean Industries specialises in recovering resources derived from end-of-life tyres, non-recycled plastics and other waste materials.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112534\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112534 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/03\/20.03.2025_10.22.55_REC-600x380.png?_t=1742426600\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An infographic explaining the process of tyre recycling.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If it goes ahead, the biogenic pyrolysis oil extracted will be processed through the refinery after being sorted and processed by Klean.<\/p>\n<p>Viva chief strategy officer Lachlan Pfeiffer said the project marked a critical step in a new role the refinery could play in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By transforming end-of-life tyres into valuable resources, we are not only reducing waste but also pioneering new paths for low-carbon fuel production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This project demonstrates our determination to develop a circular economy and deliver environmental and economic benefits for the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USED tyres will be given new life through an initiative at the Geelong Refinery.
