WORK to transform a Geelong church into a haven of live music, comedy, theatre, dance and performance are officially under way.<\/p>\n

Construction on Geelong Arts Centre’s Church Redevelopment Project is expected to be completed next year, forming a dedicated space for independent emerging artists.<\/p>\n

Once hidden behind the former Band of Hope building, the refurbished building will provide an intimate and artist-led venue to support artistic careers.<\/p>\n

“We’ve listened to our local musicians and artists, and we know that access to affordable performance spaces is key to fostering a thriving creative scene,” Geelong Arts Centre chief executive officer and creative director Rhys Holden said.<\/p>\n

“This venue will serve as an incubator for live performance, ensuring emerging talent has the space and support needed to develop and showcase their work.”<\/p>\n

The church was restored as part of the Geelong Arts Centre’s Ryrie Street redevelopment in 2019, with the interior now undergoing structural and compliance works along with acoustic treatments and upgrades.<\/p>\n

The Church Giving Campaign has helped bring the project to life, while fundraising efforts continue to support the project to ensure the delivery of an affordable venue hire model.<\/p>\n

Campaign patron Rob Costa said he is excited to see the vision come to fruition.<\/p>\n

“I encourage others to pledge their support to ensure Geelong Arts Centre reaches its fundraising goals for this much-needed home for emerging local musicians and performers,” he said.<\/p>\n

Award-winning local builder Plan Group has been appointed to deliver the interior redevelopment project with LIMINAL Architecture.<\/p>\n
