{"id":113349,"date":"2025-04-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=113349"},"modified":"2025-04-10T13:14:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T03:14:27","slug":"teenager-to-swim-in-eight-events-at-tokyo-deaflympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/teenager-to-swim-in-eight-events-at-tokyo-deaflympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenager to swim in eight events at Tokyo Deaflympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG swimmer James Logan will have a busy schedule when he represents Australia at the 100th anniversary of the Deaflympics in Tokyo in November.<\/p>\n<p>The Deaflympics, which take place every four years, are a multisport event for deaf athletes that started in France in 1924.<\/p>\n<p>It is the highest level of competition for deaf athletes across the world, and the games feature accessible communication and starting lights and flags, rather than the traditional starting signals.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old, who is a member of the Melbourne Swimming Club&#8217;s Geelong branch (MSC Geelong), was one of only 13 Australian athletes selected to compete in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>He will compete in eight events, with distance racing being his favourite.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I enjoy the 400-metre freestyle and 200m butterfly. The longer events give me time to build speed during the race,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/04\/JamesLoganwithCoachL_15716.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"655\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong swimmer James Logan with his coach Lucky Weerakkody.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The swimmer, who trains eight times per week, attributed his success to the support of his teammates and an inclusive club culture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My squad are always there for me and explain the program to me when I need help,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Logan has enjoyed state and national success since he started swimming when he was eight years old.<\/p>\n<p>At the Victorian Age State Championships in December 2024, he was awarded male multiclass swimmer of the meet and currently has 12 Australian S15 records under his belt.<\/p>\n<p>He will head to Brisbane this month for the Australian Swimming Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, he was selected for the Deaf World Championships where he and the Australian relay team secured bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Lucky Weerakkody said the club was incredibly proud of Logan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His results are a testament to the success of our program and his commitment to his sport,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG swimmer James Logan will have a busy schedule when he represents Australia at the 100th anniversary of the Deaflympics in Tokyo in November.
