POOCHES will make their way around Eastern Park Ovals one last time when the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk returns to Geelong on May 25.<\/p>\n

After 30 years of the community event, this year’s instalment will be the final walk that raises funds to help fight animal cruelty.<\/p>\n

Throughout the national event’s history, $17 million has been raised to help fund RSPCA services and care for animals.<\/p>\n

Cost of living pressures and a changed fundraising landscape since the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the decision, with RSPCA Australia chief executive officer Richard Mussell saying the call was not made lightly.<\/p>\n

“Financial strain on animal lovers and increasing event costs has meant Million Paws Walk is no longer able to provide what it once could to the community, while also effectively fundraising for much-needed RSPCA services,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The RSPCA feels it best to channel resources directly to support the animals in our care, and ensure every dollar supports the critical services and care that have become increasingly costly to provide.”<\/p>\n

The organisation thanks everyone, humans and furry friends alike, who have participated in the past, along with the staff and volunteers who made the event possible.<\/p>\n

“RSPCA encourages everyone to step up as a superhero for animals in need and get involved for the final walkies in May, as we bid farewell to our iconic event,” Mr Mussell said.<\/p>\n

“Let’s make sure it’s the biggest and best event showcasing your love for all creatures great and small.”<\/p>\n

Geelong’s final walk will be a three-kilometre lap around Eastern Park and will also include a day out with market stalls, competitions, food, entertainment and more.<\/p>\n
