NOT-FOR-PROFIT organisation Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities (ADEC) will next month host a free program aimed at supporting the wellbeing of carers living in the local community.<\/p>\n

The seven-week workshop series has been designed for multicultural and diverse communities who may be feeling isolated or detached from their community, and strives to improve quality of life, build skills and confidence, and foster social connection.<\/p>\n

Named Circle of Wellbeing for Carers, the program will begin on May 1 and will be held at the Vines Road Community Hub in Hamlyn Heights, taking place on Thursdays between 11am and 1pm.<\/p>\n

ADEC capacity building team leader Kerry Maher-Musarra said the program was all about connecting local carers to the organisations, services and people in the community able to provide them with support.<\/p>\n

“The idea of the Circle of Wellbeing will very much be looking at supporting the carers and that’s giving them a bit of self-reflection time for themselves, as well as linkage [to the available support services],” she said.<\/p>\n

“The ideal age range is 18 to 65, however, we don’t exclude anyone over 65 because there’s a lot of people over 65 that are carers, and they might be needing some support.<\/p>\n

“We’ll be enjoying food together, sharing experiences, having a laugh. It’s advocating, it’s building self-confidence, it’s connection to local supports within your area.”<\/p>\n

The sessions will include a range of activities including nutrition and cooking workshops, mindfulness and art therapy, with the flexibility to adapt to the needs of the participants.<\/p>\n

“We will look at also empowering them to feel a little bit more self-supported, maybe learn some techniques about their own self-care,” Ms Maher-Musarra said.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes making time for you is just the best mental health you can do.”<\/p>\n
