{"id":113739,"date":"2025-04-21T12:34:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-21T02:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/liberals-pledge-2-million-for-torquay-to-armstrong-creek-bike-path\/"},"modified":"2025-04-21T12:36:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T02:36:32","slug":"liberals-pledge-2-million-for-torquay-to-armstrong-creek-bike-path","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/liberals-pledge-2-million-for-torquay-to-armstrong-creek-bike-path\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberals pledge $2 million for Torquay to Armstrong Creek bike path"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">A $2 million Liberal Party pledge would support the creation of a new dedicated bike path linking Torquay and Armstrong Creek, if the party wins the upcoming election.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Liberal candidate for Corangamite Darcy Dunstan and City of Greater Geelong mayor\u00a0Stretch Kontelj arrived at their press conference on bikes to announce the commitment, which would help deliver a separated bike lane along Horseshoe Bend Road from South Beach Road in Torquay to Warralily Boulevard in Armstrong Creek.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve heard from lots of people who cycle along Horseshoe Bend Road that this stretch of road can be dangerous for even the most experienced riders,\u201d Mr Dunstan said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThis investment will provide a dedicated, separated bike lane along Horseshoe Bend Road all the way from South Beach Road in Torquay to Warralily Boulevard in Armstrong Creek.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The project aligns with ongoing work by Surf Coast Shire and the City of Greater Geelong to improve active transport links between the two growth areas.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In May 2024, this masthead reported that both councils had received $30,000 through the Transport Accident Commission\u2019s Local Government Grant Program to investigate options for a safer cycling route.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>That study focused on off-road alternatives to the Surf Coast Highway, which is considered hazardous for cyclists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Former Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said at the time the project would provide a key connection between communities and encourage active transport.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cAt a time when all governments are trying to promote active transport, have fitter, healthier communities, it\u2019s a really key priority for us and we would like to see it come to fruition,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The City of Greater Geelong\u2019s project website states that community engagement closed on February 3, and the project is due to be finalised by May 2025.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A $2 million Liberal Party pledge would support the creation of a new dedicated bike path linking Torquay and Armstrong Creek, if the party wins the upcoming election.
