{"id":114098,"date":"2025-05-03T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=114098"},"modified":"2025-05-01T11:14:21","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T01:14:21","slug":"lions-resting-up-again-after-first-win-of-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/lions-resting-up-again-after-first-win-of-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions resting up again after first win of season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LEOPOLD is striving to find rhythm amid its stop-start beginning to the GFNL A grade netball season.<\/p>\n<p>The Lions have the bye this weekend and have yet to play on consecutive weekends.<\/p>\n<p>They joined everyone for Round 1 on April 12, had the Easter break and then defeated Colac last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Kaela Hughes said her side would play an intraclub practice match in preparation for their round 4 battle with reigning premier Newtown and Chilwell at Elderslie Reserve on May 10.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s been a tricky start, Hughes was happy with how the group responded after falling 63-16 to the highly-fancied St Joseph&#8217;s in its season-opener.<\/p>\n<p>She described it as &#8220;redemption round&#8221; as the Lions beat the Tigers 68-53 at home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/0G2A7891_73880.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lions captain and centre Darcy Wilson was named her team&#8217;s best player against Colac last weekend.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hughes said the team held it together in attack and its accuracy significantly improved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did come down a bit hard after round 1, we shot 16 goals for the whole game, whereas in Round 2 we put up 22 goals in the first quarter,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just driving those high standards, the goalers are getting to training earlier and putting shots up before we start and shooting throughout training before we finish drills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Goal shooter Nat Heagney hit 46 of her 50 attempts and featured in the best while Charlotte Murray, who played goal attack most of the game, netted 17\u00a0from 20.<\/p>\n<p>Captain and centre Darcy Wilson was named the Lions&#8217; best due to her calming influence and communication.<\/p>\n<p>In Round 3 tomorrow (Saturday, May 3), Geelong West Giants host the unbeaten Newtown and Chilwell, Grovedale battle St Albans, Lara meet St Mary&#8217;s, St Joseph&#8217;s clash with Bell Park and Colac duel South Barwon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LEOPOLD is striving to find rhythm amid its stop-start beginning to the GFNL A grade netball season.
