V\/LINE is teaming up with Neighbourhood Watch this weekend to help locals secure their licence plates to their cars with anti-theft screws.<\/p>\n

The SafePL8 event will take place on Saturday, May 10 at Lara Station between 10am and 2pm, and is part of a broader Victoria Police initiative aimed at making it harder for number plates to be stolen or used illegally.<\/p>\n

Victoria Police, the Victorian State Emergency Service and the local Lions Club will assist on the day.<\/p>\n

A V\/Line spokesperson said everyone was invited to come along tomorrow.<\/p>\n

“We’re partnering with Neighbourhood Watch to deliver this important SafePL8 initiative for Geelong Line passengers and encourage the community to get involved.”<\/p>\n

“SafePL8 events are part of ongoing efforts by V\/Line to help improve safety for passengers, staff and local communities.”<\/p>\n

This weekend’s event follows another SafePL8 event facilitated by V\/Line at North Geelong Station in March, which proved to be very popular with the local community, with anti-theft screws installed on 245 cars.<\/p>\n

Almost 27,000 number plate thefts were recorded in Victoria in 2024, up 45.8 per cent on the previous year, a 10-year high that in March motivated Neighbourhood Watch to join calls for anti-theft screws to be mandated by the Victorian government.<\/p>\n

“Number plates remain the most commonly stolen item from vehicles, with thieves able to remove standard plates in under 10 seconds,” Neighbourhood Watch chief executive Bambi Gordon said at the time.<\/p>\n

“Stolen plates are being used to commit other crimes including fuel theft, drug trafficking, ram raids, burglaries, police evasion and avoiding traffic infringements.<\/p>\n

“The financial impact for victims is significant, with replacement costs ranging from $39 to $293 depending on plate type, plus the time taken waiting for replacement plates. Additionally, driving without displaying proper number plates can result in a $385 fine and three demerit points.”<\/p>\n
