THE City of Greater Geelong is inviting residents to join a reference group that will inform one of its civil infrastructure upgrades\u00a0funding models.<\/p>\n

By joining a community reference group, locals will have the opportunity to provide their views on Special Rate and Charge (SRC) Schemes.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the panel is to revise the drafted SRC procedure and how costs are allocated.<\/p>\n

The SRC schemes are often used in older neighbourhoods where the cost of infrastructure upgrades is shared between the city and community groups who benefit from them.<\/p>\n

Infrastructure such as footpaths and sealed roads not provided by developers are often constructed under the scheme and using this approach improvements can be delivered faster.<\/p>\n

“Some of the older developments of Greater Geelong have considerable infrastructure needs, such as sealed roads, footpaths, kerbs and channels, and stormwater drains,” Chair of the City Services, Capital Works, Parks and Gardens portfolio Councillor Trent Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

“By enabling contributions from both the City and those who directly benefit, we’re able to get on with the job of enhancing our\u00a0neighbourhoods faster.”<\/p>\n

Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the city wanted to hear from the people who live in or own property in Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n

“These schemes allow us to make real improvements to local communities, but it’s so important that we get our approach to them right, which is why we’re convening this community reference group.”<\/p>\n

Applications to join the community reference group are open now and close at 5pm on Monday, May 26, applicants will be shortlisted by the end of June before workshops are held in August.<\/p>\n
