Vouchers are available to applicants over the age of 18 who reside in the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Golden Plains or Queenscliff shires and hold a valid Centrelink pension or concession card.<\/p>\n
GAWS head veterinarian Dr Ruth Dover said the most well-known benefit of desexing a pet cat was to prevent unwanted litters, but the many additional health benefits might be a surprise to cat owners.<\/p>\n
“Desexed cats often live longer, healthier lives because they are less prone to certain health issues and behaviours that can put them at risk.<\/p>\n
“Desexing your cat can lower the risk of some infections and cancers. Cats who are desexed are less likely to engage in aggressive behaviour. It can reduce spraying, yowling, excessive grooming and roaming.<\/p>\n
“Generally, desexed cats are more content and relaxed.”<\/p>\n
Last year, almost 2,000 cats came into GAWS’ care.<\/p>\n
