{"id":115050,"date":"2025-05-24T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=115050"},"modified":"2025-05-22T11:16:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T01:16:59","slug":"lions-celebrate-naidoc-game-with-resounding-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/lions-celebrate-naidoc-game-with-resounding-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions celebrate NAIDOC Game with resounding win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELMONT Lions shone on &#8220;one of the bigger days on the calendar&#8221; last weekend at Winter Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>They scored regularly in the annual NAIDOC Game, defeating Corio 20.20 (140) to 10.7 (67) in GDFL round 6.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Andy Walsgott said the reserves, seniors and A grade sides from both clubs were on the oval for the pre-match smoking ceremony which featured a cultural dance.<\/p>\n<p>It was led by the Lions&#8217; Jordy Edwards &#8220;whose family are the backbone of the club&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Walsgott said Belmont had many proud Indigenous people involved in the club whether as players, volunteers or on the committee.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/0G2A2956_41669.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jordy Edwards during the Belmont Lions&#8217; NAIDOC Game ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He noted they had also played a significant role in keeping the Lions going over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting second on the ladder, the unbeaten Lions play 11th-placed Geelong West Giants away tomorrow (Saturday, May 24)\u00a0at 2pm.<\/p>\n<p>Walsgott lauded his team&#8217;s offensive play and ability to adapt to what Corio threw at them, while noting the group had aspects to work on.<\/p>\n<p>He said they said defended better in the second half after Corio had its fair share of scoring shots up to half-time.<\/p>\n<p>The coach went on to talk about how they want to use the ball, such as when to play safe and when\u00a0to attack.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/0G2A4710_42085.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Midfielder\/defender Braeden Eddy was best on ground for Belmont Lions last weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been speaking to them a lot about identifying the moments in the game and what that requires of us and making the right decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, the Lions took considerable injuries from the game, with Nick Sherriff sustaining a broken collarbone, Jesse Stapleton a broken nose and Josh Wilson a hamstring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We got hit by the injury bus a little bit, unfortunately,&#8221; Walsgott said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BELMONT Lions shone on &#8220;one of the bigger days on the calendar&#8221; last weekend at Winter Reserve.
