{"id":115051,"date":"2025-05-22T04:00:45","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T18:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=115051"},"modified":"2025-05-21T19:18:04","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T09:18:04","slug":"bellarine-storm-secure-four-time-olympian-after-sacking-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/bellarine-storm-secure-four-time-olympian-after-sacking-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Bellarine Storm secure four-time Olympian after sacking coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELLARINE Storm has moved swiftly to appoint a new men\u2019s coach Ray Borner after sacking Luke Beauglehall last week.<\/p>\n<p>The Storm fired Beauglehall just six rounds into the Big V championship season.<\/p>\n<p>They are 11th on the ladder with two wins and seven losses, including six defeats in a row.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the team enduring a difficult start to the 2025 season, the club determined that a change in leadership was necessary to refocus and realign the program moving forward,&#8221; the club said in a statement released on Thursday last week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Luke has played a significant role in the development of our senior men&#8217;s program, serving as the inaugural head coach from our entry into the Country Basketball League (CBL) through to our elevation into Big V.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His leadership and recruitment helped lay a strong foundation, allowing the program to establish itself quickly and successfully.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161952\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-161952 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/luke-beauglehall-cropped-1024x538-1.jpg?_t=1747818343\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bellarine Storm have parted ways with men&#8217;s coach Luke Beauglehall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beauglehall delivered the club&#8217;s first senior title, winning Division 1 in 2022 and gaining promotion to the championship division.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We extend our sincere thanks to Luke and his family for their commitment, time, and contributions to the Bellarine Storm,&#8221; the club stated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He leaves a legacy as the coach who delivered our first senior title, and we wish him and his family all the very best for the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New coach Borner brings a winning pedigree and wealth of basketball knowledge as a four-time Olympian, NBL MVP, and member of the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRay\u2019s experience at the highest levels of basketball, both as a player and coach, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to our program,&#8221; BPBA general manager Nick Stamatopoulos said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis passion for developing athletes and building strong team culture aligns perfectly with our values at Storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re confident Ray will play a key role in guiding our men\u2019s program forward and continuing to grow the game here on the peninsula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borner said he wanted to assist in any way he could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw the club had an opening, I reached out right away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so excited to continue growing the game at Bellarine and get involved in their devoted basketball community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borner will make his first appearance at the helm this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Storm play Wyndham this Saturday, May 24, at 7.30pm and Pakenham this Sunday at 2pm in a home double header.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BELLARINE Storm has moved swiftly to appoint a new men\u2019s coach Ray Borner after sacking Luke Beauglehall last week.
