{"id":115559,"date":"2025-06-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=115559"},"modified":"2025-06-05T13:37:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T03:37:40","slug":"waterslide-closing-down-new-ride-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/waterslide-closing-down-new-ride-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Waterslide closing down, new ride coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A WATERSLIDE that has brought joy to millions across about four decades is being closed down.<\/p>\n<p>Works to decommission and remove the Kardinia Aquatic Centre waterslide started on Monday this week.<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong executive director of city life executive director Anthony Basford said the waterslide had been a wonderful part of the Geelong community and many residents would have fond memories of using it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As it was built in the 1980s, the waterslide is now at the end of its usable life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cost of a new waterslide is around $1.3 million, so we have carefully considered how to best replace the waterslide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115815\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-115815 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/Kardinia-waterslide-768x1024.jpg?_t=1749094625\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/Kardinia-waterslide-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/Kardinia-waterslide-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/Kardinia-waterslide-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/Kardinia-waterslide-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/Kardinia-waterslide-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kardinia Aquatic Centre waterslide is closing down.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A giant inflatable obstacle course will take its place at the pool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new course will promote fun and fitness and be operated at times similar to that of the waterslide,&#8221; Mr Basford said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will be available for the coming 2025\/26 summer season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the city recognised families and schools loved Kardinia Aquatic Centre, and fun water activities were important to the Geelong community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have also taken into account the longer-term implications to the site through the Kardinia Park Master Plan and potential funding avenues in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fortunately, our region is well-served with waterslide facilities at Leisurelink, Splashdown and the new Norlane ARC.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A WATERSLIDE that has brought joy to millions across about four decades is being closed down.
