{"id":116353,"date":"2025-06-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=116353"},"modified":"2025-06-21T22:54:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T12:54:40","slug":"biyal-a-armstrong-creek-library-gains-nod-for-eco-friendly-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/biyal-a-armstrong-creek-library-gains-nod-for-eco-friendly-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library gains nod for eco-friendly design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library has been recognised for its environmentally conscious design and thoughtful community spaces at this year&#8217;s Australian Interior Design Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The $22 million cultural hub, which opened to the public in August last year, received a commendation in the awards&#8217; sustainable advancement category, a nod to its environmentally sensitive design, use of robust and environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient, low maintenance fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>The building, designed by Buchan Architects and built by Nicholson Construction, spans three storeys and features a design inspired by a &#8220;living water&#8221; narrative that was developed in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/06\/Biyal-aArmstrongCree_37532.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The colours, materials, plantings and strategically highlighted views included in the design have been chosen to evoke the landscape of Wadawurrung Country. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This narrative is reflected in the floor pattern, which mimics a winding creek, and the building&#8217;s rippling ceiling sculptures, while the colours, materials, plantings and strategically highlight views of the surrounding area have been designed to evoke the landscape of Wadawurrung Country.<\/p>\n<p>Buchan Architects senior interior designer Dominkia Piechowski said the firm&#8217;s approach to the building weaved cultural heritage together with sustainable design choices to create a space both deeply connected to Country and responsive to evolving community needs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through natural materials, biophilic element and flexible spatial planning, we have crafted an environment that fosters social cohesion and lifelong learning,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_164109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-164109\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-164109\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/06\/Biyal-a-Armstrong-Creek-Library-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-164109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library opened to the public in August last year and houses a collection of more than 30,000 books and resources. Photo: TOM ROE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the building is more than a library, describing it as a &#8220;sustainable, welcoming space that reflects the values of our growing community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This commendation is a proud moment for our city,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recognition at a national level highlights the importance of investing in public infrastructure that is both environmentally responsible and community-driven.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Biyal-a Armstrong Creek was jointly funded by the City of Greater Geelong and the Victorian government.<\/p>\n<p>It is also pursuing a 5-star Green Star Buildings Certification through the Green Building Council of Australia, an independently verified rating that would recognise the structure&#8217;s environmental leadership, reduced carbon emissions and improved health and wellbeing outcomes for users.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library has been recognised for its environmentally conscious design and thoughtful community spaces at this year&#8217;s Australian Interior Design Awards.
