{"id":116716,"date":"2025-07-01T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=116716"},"modified":"2025-06-25T20:58:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T10:58:46","slug":"local-umpire-levels-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/local-umpire-levels-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Local umpire levels up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A MOUNT Duneed local is one step closer to his dream of becoming an AFL umpire following his selection in the state development team.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Janke was recognised for his strong form in local football competitions by being awarded a spot in the Victorian Football League Development Squad.<\/p>\n<p>This honour will give him the privilege of umpiring the VFLW league and Coates Talent League competitions in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Janke has been umpiring since 2017, starting as a 16-year-old in Shepperton as a boundary umpire.<\/p>\n<p>During his four years on the boundary, he adjudged two senior grand finals and then graduated to on field umpire status.<\/p>\n<p>When the pandemic hit, Janke made the move down to Geelong for university and has kept his umpiring journey rolling.<\/p>\n<p>He joined the Community Umpiring Accelerator Program four years ago, giving him the opportunity to umpire the V\/Line Cup, go to VFL training and undertake online training.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/IMG_1482_33118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Mount Duneed local has spent time as both a boundary and field umpire since getting into the craft<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Janke is currently field umpiring in the Bellarine Football Netball League, Geelong Football Netball League and Geelong District Football Netball League.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was rapt to see his efforts rewarded with VFL team selection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s pretty exciting, it&#8217;s still sinking in a bit! It&#8217;s been a goal of mine for a few years now, and it&#8217;s good to finally get there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a spot that opened up, and the academy coaches picked me for my performances and my engagement there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting that I&#8217;ll now be umpiring the VFLW and Coates League, as well as training twice a week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He hopes the VFL pathway will lead to even bigger umpiring opportunities in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Long term, I definitely want to become an AFL umpire,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve still got a bit to go yet, but hopefully I can get there.&#8221;<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A MOUNT Duneed local is one step closer to his dream of becoming an AFL umpire following his selection in the state development team.
