{"id":116997,"date":"2025-07-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=116997"},"modified":"2025-07-02T16:41:45","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T06:41:45","slug":"tails-wag-for-world-dachshund-day-in-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/tails-wag-for-world-dachshund-day-in-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Tails wag for World Dachshund Day in Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG joined in the global celebration of World Dachshund Day when 30 of the short-legged dogs made their way to the waterfront on June 22.<\/p>\n<p>Much like the dog breed, the annual event celebrates the longest and shortest day right around the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/Attachment_34139.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"804\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The event celebrated the longest and shortest day of the year with the longest and shortest dog breed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong host Maz Violi said the local event was mainly focused on raising awareness about the dachshund breed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re very unique. They come with unique health conditions as well, such as IVDD probably being the most prominent one, which is a disc disorder they can get around the age of five years old.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As part of the celebration, dachshunds and their owners made their way from the Geelong Boathouse down to the Wharf Shed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/Attachment_34165.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"759\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The group made its way from the Geelong Boathouse down to the Wharf Shed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One lucky dog also received a prize for being the longest and shortest, while the event also raised funds for DISA, an Australian dachshund IVDD support charity.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Violi said the inaugural walk for Geelong had received some great feedback from community members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The highlight for me was just seeing everyone come together, getting to know each other and talking about our breed in general and seeing how excited everyone was.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing a community of people bonding with a common interest, and that was our dogs, it was just beautiful to watch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Event organisers are aiming to make it an annual celebration in Geelong and hoping it gets bigger each year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/Attachment_34115.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The day was all about raising awareness for the breed and their own unique health conditions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Thank [you to] everyone who came along, including our short-legged friends and those who donated, and most importantly [those] who just came along and enjoyed their time,&#8221; Ms Violi said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG joined in the global celebration of World Dachshund Day when 30 of the short-legged dogs made their way to the waterfront on June 22.
