{"id":117086,"date":"2025-07-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=117086"},"modified":"2025-07-03T14:45:57","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T04:45:57","slug":"police-studentsunite-in-blue-connect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/police-studentsunite-in-blue-connect\/","title":{"rendered":"Police, students unite in Blue Connect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NORTHERN Bay College&#8217;s unique Blue Connect program is uniting key players in the community and something everyone involved looks forward to every Friday of the school year.<\/p>\n<p>Officers from Corio Police join students from years 9 to 12 for a fitness session at 7.30am before they have breakfast together.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the school welcomed special guests with Western Region Assistant Commissioner Michael Grainger and the Special Operations Group coming on-site to give a demonstration of some of their equipment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/IMG_2016_88397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The program is about the police and students working together.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The police have been really generous,&#8221; college principal Scott Diamond said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had the air wing, the dog squad and the special operations team. We&#8217;ve had some of the police who&#8217;ve been able to do a demonstration with their drones.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So all of the really exciting parts of policing have also been on show for the kids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/IMG_2029_88303.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northern Bay College&#8217;s Blue Connect program welcomed Assistant Commissioner of Police Michael Grainger and the Special Operations Group in June.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Diamond said the program had been going for about five years and often involved an interview with one of the police officers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;&#8221;It came [together] probably from just a connection between one of our staff members and the local Corio police,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Really with the idea that both groups wanted to highlight how positive the young people in the area were.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/IMG_2063_88346.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"340\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northern Bay College\u2019s Blue Connect program welcomed special guest Assistant Commissioner of Police Michael Grainger (right) in June.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And this was a way of getting both police and teenagers working together and spending time together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that generally when you work together and spend time together with people, you develop some really positive relationships and see the best in each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Diamond lauded the staff who have led the fostering of the relationships as well as the staff and police who have volunteered their time for the breakfast.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/07\/IMG_1996_88307.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"794\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students have been able to try special equipment during the program.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He praised Corio Village Shopping Centre for donating the food, and said it provided employment for students with a strong relationship benefitting all, including customers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anecdotally, we have been told that the conduct of Northern Bay students in the village is really positive and whether we can connect the two things together or not, I don&#8217;t know, but it&#8217;s nice to hear that there is that respect happening by the kids for these really crucial organisations that provide that community and village feel,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NORTHERN Bay College&#8217;s unique Blue Connect program is uniting key players in the community and something everyone involved looks forward to every Friday of the school year.
