A LONG-AWAITED upgrade to one of Lara’s busiest junctions is inching closer, with planning now under way for a major overhaul of the Six Ways intersection.<\/p>\n

The $16 million project, pledged ahead of the 2022 state election, will transform the intersection where Station Lake Road, Patullos Road, Forest Road North and Forest Road South meet, with the existing single lane roundabout to be replaced with traffic lights.<\/p>\n

Long considered a safety concern by locals, the intersection has been the subject of calls for improvement for years.<\/p>\n

The upgrade is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce the risk and severity of crashes and make the area safer for all road users by “preventing drivers from attempting risky and uncontrolled movements”.<\/p>\n

Under the proposed design, the right turn from Kees Road onto Patullos Road will be removed, as will the right turn from Flinders Avenue onto Station Lake Road, and Station Lake Road onto Flinders Avenue.<\/p>\n

The Pioneers’ Memorial Cairn and the nearby public toilet block will also be relocated, while additional lanes and new pedestrian crossings will be added at the intersection.<\/p>\n

Lara MP Ella George, who has been pushing for progress on the project since she took office, said the works would support safer and faster travel through the growing township.<\/p>\n

“As Lara grows, and more families move in, we need to upgrade roads and intersections to ensure locals can get to where they need to go quickly and safely,” Ms George said.<\/p>\n

Planning work is expected to be completed this year, with feedback presently being sought on the proposed plans.<\/p>\n

“It’s important that local voices are heard during [the] planning process, so I encourage everyone to have their say in the online survey, which is open until July 27,” Ms George said.<\/p>\n
