TWO Geelong organisations have joined forces to create an all-inclusive playground for children in the region.<\/p>\n
Liberty Disability Services and Friend in Me have transformed a patch of dirt in Norlane into a space where children can play in a safe and judgmental-free zone.<\/p>\n
The enclosed space was built with complete accessibility in mind with the cubby house also featuring a ramp to get in and out with enough space to put a chair.<\/p>\n
“The whole idea is it’s got to be an inclusive space that anyone can come to, doesn’t matter your disability, how you identify, you feel welcome and you can come,” Liberty Disability Services co-founder Kathie Denno said.<\/p>\n
“You’re not going to get stared at because your child is in the corner having a meltdown, it’s ok because tomorrow it’ll be my child in the corner having a meltdown.”<\/p>\n
“You should never have to apologise because your child is wired differently or presents differently because they’re in a wheelchair and they can’t do the same activities.”<\/p>\n
The space features plenty of room for children to run around, along with a cubby house, swing, soft play, and shaded undercover area.<\/p>\n
While accessible playgrounds are not new to the region, the two organisations believe it’s the people that make their space different.<\/p>\n
Friend in Me founder Louise Larkin said it was the energy they put into the space and the feeling of safety that made it enjoyable for families to attend.<\/p>\n
“You can put any mellow mat down, you can put any sensory lighting, but it’s what you’re bringing to the room and being really trusting with the families that’s coming through.<\/p>\n
“I truly believe that’s what it is here, we can have this and take nice photos, but it we’re not connecting with the families then it’s nothing.”<\/p>\n
Looking towards the future, Liberty Disability Services and Friend in Me are hoping to hold accessible playgroups in the space and plan to one day include a supported employment caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
