{"id":119111,"date":"2025-08-14T12:33:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T02:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/cliff-collapse-prompts-closure-at-addiscot-beach\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T12:37:54","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T02:37:54","slug":"cliff-collapse-prompts-closure-at-addiscot-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/cliff-collapse-prompts-closure-at-addiscot-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"Cliff collapse prompts closure at Addiscot Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GREAT Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) is advising people to keep clear of the Point Addiscot Beach (Jarosite Point) following a major cliff collapse this morning (Thursday, August 14.)<\/p>\n<p>About 100m of the cliff face has failed, with about 20m of rock falling to the base.<\/p>\n<p>This has resulted in a closure being implemented and people urged to stay away and obey closure signs.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed an earthquake on the Mornington Peninsula at about 4.20am today triggered the cliff collapse.<\/p>\n<p>GORCAPA acting director environment and coastal operations Leia Howes said the collapse was a stark reminder of how quickly the coastline could change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe site is extremely unstable, and even a small movement in the rock could trigger further collapse without warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are asking the public to stay away from the area until it has been fully assessed, as more rockfalls are possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GORCAPA and Parks Victoria will continue to monitor the area and check other high-risk sites with the possibility the earthquake has triggered other falls.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/greatoceanroadauthority.vic.gov.au\"><strong>greatoceanroadauthority.vic.gov.au<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GREAT Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) is advising people to keep clear of the Point Addiscot Beach (Jarosite Point) following a major cliff collapse this morning (Thursday, August 14.)
