{"id":119640,"date":"2025-09-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=119640"},"modified":"2025-08-28T12:46:42","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T02:46:42","slug":"belmont-embraces-r-u-ok-day-in-real-sporting-spirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/belmont-embraces-r-u-ok-day-in-real-sporting-spirit\/","title":{"rendered":"Belmont embraces R U OK Day in real sporting spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELMONT High School is gearing up for the 15th edition of its popular staff vs student basketball match.<\/p>\n<p>The event will once again aim to shed light on mental health awareness as part of R U OK Day celebrations on September 12.<\/p>\n<p>R U OK Day is Australia&#8217;s national suicide prevention initiative, encouraging simple yet vital check-ins which can help to change lives.<\/p>\n<p>National data shows nearly 70 per cent of young people aged 12\u201325 hesitate to ask for help during tough times, but the same share is open to heart-to-heart chats with close friends, preferably face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>Belmont High School teacher Chad McLauchlan said this statistic shows how crucial it is to foster safe, trustworthy connections in schools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What began as an end-of-season celebration for senior teams has evolved into a highlight for students, alumni, staff and families,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Including R U OK Day reinforces the importance of checking in and looking after our wellbeing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/IMG_2155_19451.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Belmont High School teacher Chad McLauchlan with student Jai Natonewski.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This year&#8217;s match also benchmarks Belmont&#8217;s ties to the broader Geelong basketball boom, propelled by the Geelong Venom WNBL and broader grassroots growth.<\/p>\n<p>Former students such as US Division 1 athletes Tom Pupavac, Matthew Johns and Angus Davies, AFLW stars Annie Lee and Laura Gardiner, and NBL1 official Shannon Jennings, have all forged exceptional paths \u2013 reinforcing the school&#8217;s reputation for nurturing talent and community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Basketball has truly exploded in Geelong,&#8221; Mr McLauchlan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about more than sport, it&#8217;s unity, opportunity, and wellbeing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr McLauchlan said the staff had never defeated the students but noted this year finally might be the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The annual game transcends competition; it humanises staff, breaks down barriers, and strengthens trust, vital for both academic success and emotional safety,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BELMONT High School is gearing up for the 15th edition of its popular staff vs student basketball match.
