{"id":120029,"date":"2025-09-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=120029"},"modified":"2025-09-10T03:32:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T17:32:00","slug":"swimmers-return-with-swag-of-medals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/swimmers-return-with-swag-of-medals\/","title":{"rendered":"Swimmers return with swag of medals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A PAIR of Geelong&#8217;s top swimmers have returned from Thailand triumphant, bringing home a swag of medals between them.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Swimming Club members Ryan McGrane and Bradley Doolan donned the green and gold at last month&#8217;s Virtus World Swimming Championships, representing both Geelong and the nation on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p>Held this year in Bangkok between August 20 and August 30, the Virtus World Swimming Championships is a major international event that brings together athletes with intellectual impairments from around the world to compete at the highest level.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/538805864_1344617770_27129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doolan during the butterfly leg of his bronze medal winning 400m individual medal event. Photo: FACEBOOK\/SPORT INCLUSION AUSTRALIA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McGrane continued his strong performance in the lead-up to the event, taking home silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke events, and a bronze in 400m freestyle event.<\/p>\n<p>He was also named team captain and led Australia&#8217;s elite team of 30 athletes as one of two flag bearers at the championship&#8217;s opening ceremony. His mother Helen described it as a &#8220;once-in-a-lifetime experience&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For McGrane, who first represented Australia at the 2022 Virtus Oceania Asia Games in Brisbane, his selection was recognition of his &#8220;unwavering commitment&#8221; to the team, impressive performances and natural leadership.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/538900744_1344611437_27087.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">McGrane (far right) on the dais, receiving his bronze medal after an impressive performance in the 400m freestyle event.
