{"id":120431,"date":"2025-09-11T04:00:52","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=120431"},"modified":"2025-09-10T16:26:32","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T06:26:32","slug":"local-disability-conference-a-huge-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/local-disability-conference-a-huge-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Local disability conference a huge success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL paediatric allied health organisation Kids+ has united disability advocates and professional and family carers to spark social change at its biennial Changemakers Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which was held earlier this month, explored the theme &#8220;Breaking the Mould&#8221; and encouraged guests to share, connect and empower each other to reshape support for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Participants and presenters included people with lived experience, therapists, researchers, community workers and parents.<\/p>\n<p>Keynote speeches by CanChild&#8217;s Dr Olaf Kraus De Camargo, Qubit Incubator&#8217;s Shay Jayawardena, and BackTrack Youthworks&#8217; Bernie Shakeshaft explored early intervention, working with remote communities and disadvantaged youth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/20250904Changemakers_53658.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australian Paralympic silver medallist Campbell Message in wheelchair basketball delivers a workshop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other highlights included a popular session by local men&#8217;s group leader Matt Perrett on the support and culture of dads and male carers of children with disabilities, as well as co-designed sessions with physiotherapist Sara West, and local parents Cam and Liv Young, and Hannah and Josh Jenkins.<\/p>\n<p>Kids+ chief executive officer Shaun Cannon said the Changemakers Conference was a positive and purposeful experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Changemakers Conference has three aims: prioritise the perspective of those with lived experience of disability, provide a platform for those with practical professional expertise to share their ideas and experience, and remind us that each of us has the potential to be a changemaker every day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/20250904Changemakers_53734.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keynote speaker Shay Jayawardena discusses how her team is reimagining communication methods in the Northern Territory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Attendees said they were invigorated and empowered by the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Changemakers helped me refocus how I can centre family, culture and a person&#8217;s dreams.
