{"id":120447,"date":"2025-09-12T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=120447"},"modified":"2025-09-10T16:40:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T06:40:59","slug":"torquay-teens-champion-good-friday-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/torquay-teens-champion-good-friday-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay teens champion Good Friday Appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FUNDRAISING for next year&#8217;s Good Friday Appeal is already under way and two Torquay youngsters are helping lead the charge to raise critical funds for those in need.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1931, the annual appeal has contributed more than $400 million to support the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital (RCH), with the funds raised aiding research, the purchase of life-saving equipment and ongoing training the\u00a0hospital staff.<\/p>\n<p>Scarlett McGowan and Belle Strahan both spent time in the RCH as babies, and with the hospital&#8217;s support, are both now in good health.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_169651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169651\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-169651\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/IMG_2355_59549-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1023\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The two Torquay girls are helping to lead the charge for the 2026 Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scarlett credits the RCH for &#8220;saving her life&#8221;, after she received a heart transplant almost 17 years ago. The hospital&#8217;s support since the operation, the Surf Coast Secondary College student said, has been &#8220;incredible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I lead a normal life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every three months, I go to the RCH for a battery of checks to ensure that my health is okay, and [to see] how I am progressing with life activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am delighted to say that, as well as my study, I have part-time jobs in Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will be helping with the GFA again this year, and I encourage everybody to hop in and raise some money, whether it be a small amount or a large amount.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_169654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169654\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-169654\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/IMG_2376_59547-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"914\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Torquay Lions member Peter Thomas, Belle Strahan, Scarlett McGowan and Peter McMahon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Belle&#8217;s journey with the RCH began before she was born, when a 20-week scan revealed anomalies with her heart and kidneys. Born with multiple heart defects and a single kidney, Belle was transferred to the RCH for urgent care and was expected to undergo surgery as a newborn. She responded well to treatment with Prostaglandin E1, and has so far avoided the need for cardiac surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Belle leads an active life and enjoys taekwondo and swimming. She is also a volunteer lifeguard patroller with Torquay Surf Life\u00a0Saving Club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The staff and volunteers at the children&#8217;s hospital do an incredible job,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It makes me happy to be able to give something back to the children&#8217;s hospital, which does such valuable, life-saving work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/IMG_2375_59501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Torquay Lions member Peter Thomas, Belle Strahan, Scarlett McGowan and Peter McMahon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 15 years, Belle has raised more than $20,000 for HeartKids Australia and the Good Friday Appeal, including more than $2,000 for last year&#8217;s appeal.<\/p>\n<p>GFA regional area manager Peter McMahon urged the community to get behind the cause which, he said, as a grandfather, was &#8220;very close&#8221; to his heart.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our planning team wants to make a difference \u2014 a difference to all the youngsters who need help from the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital and our local health services.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-169660\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/IMG_2370_59565-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Good Friday Appeal ambassadors Belle Strahan and Scarlett McGowan.
