THE Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Bicycle Network are inviting people to register early for this year’s TAC Great Vic Bike Ride to claim a free high-vis jersey.<\/p>\n

This year’s edition of the popular cycling event feature five days of riding, camping, and community connection along the Great Ocean Road, with the message “Be Seen, Be Safe. Share the Road. Go Safely”.<\/p>\n

Every rider who enters before September 30 will receive a free limited-edition high-visibility jersey.<\/p>\n

Former UCI WorldTour rider and Hendry’s owner Simon Gerrans is an ambassador for the ride.<\/p>\n

“It’s fantastic to see events like the Great Vic not only celebrate the joy of riding but also highlight the importance of road safety,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The high-vis jersey is a great reminder that visibility saves lives, but riders’ safety also depends on drivers slowing down, paying attention and giving people on bikes the space they need. I’m looking forward to joining thousands of riders on this iconic journey.”<\/p>\n

The ride is part of the TAC’s new three-year partnership with Bicycle Network to support the development of safer, healthier and more connected communities in Victoria through active transport.<\/p>\n

“The Bicycle Network is committed to working with the TAC to prevent road trauma and encourage safe, sustainable travel,” Bicycle Network chief executive officer Alison McCormack said.<\/p>\n

“The TAC Great Vic Bike Ride is one of the most uplifting weeks on the bike in Australia, and this partnership ensures safety is built into every pedal stroke.”<\/p>\n

Riders are among Victoria’s most vulnerable road users as they lack the level of protection that vehicles offer in a crash. A collision with a vehicle can result in death or serious injury even at relatively low speeds.<\/p>\n

Riders are encouraged to play their part by using lights, being visible, following road rules and riding predictably, but their safety also relies on drivers making safe choices behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

Motorists play a critical role in protecting vulnerable road users \u2013 that means putting phones away while driving and activating ‘Do Not Disturb’, performing head checks before turning, slowing down when approaching people on bikes and always giving riders at least 1m of space (or 1.5m in speed zones above 60kmh).<\/p>\n

“We’re proud to continue our support of Bicycle Network to not only improve road safety outcomes but also encourage safe and inclusive ways for Victorians to move through their communities,” TAC senior manager of marketing, sponsorships and engagement Angela Hann said.<\/p>\n

“The TAC Great Vic Bike Ride is the perfect setting for us to engage with Victoria’s ever-growing bike riding community on road safety and remind motorists about their important role in keeping riders safe.”<\/p>\n
