SCHOOL students are encouraged to get out on the water these school holidays as the Royal Geelong Yacht Club launches its school holiday program.<\/p>\n

Its program of events will kick off on Monday (September 22), with primary-aged learn-to-sail programs designed for children aged seven to 12-years-old, giving them a chance to explore the world of racing.<\/p>\n

By the end of the course, participants will be able to sail with tiller extension, sail upwind and downwind, tie a figure-eight knot, round twice and two half hitches and more.<\/p>\n

In this course, participants will also learn about the wind and weather patterns, basic physics, navigation and environmental awareness.<\/p>\n

In the second week of the school holidays, secondary-aged students will take to the water with a learn-to-sail program perfect for students looking for a unique activity that also builds confidence, teamwork skills and problem solving.<\/p>\n

Royal Geelong Yacht Club commodore Paul Buchholz said the club wants everyone to be able to get out on the water and have a great time.<\/p>\n

Participants will explore the world of sailing and racing, while also learning lifelong skills including weather patterns, navigation, environmental awareness and more.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Sailing can sometimes get a reputation as an older or more traditional sport, but it really is for everyone,” he said.<\/p>\n

“If the kids make some friends along the way, or even just finish the week with a smile on their face or feel more confident in a boat, that’s a win.”<\/p>\n

Mr Buchholz encouraged anyone who’s ever watched the SailGP or Sydney to Hobart race and thought ‘I’d like to give that a try’, to give it a go.<\/p>\n

“Sailing is a sport that builds resilience and teamwork, but it’s also about enjoying the moment with mates,” he said.<\/p>\n

“You don’t need experience, just a bit of water confidence and a sense of adventure.”<\/p>\n

While no experience is needed for the courses, water confidence is required.<\/p>\n
