{"id":121205,"date":"2025-09-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=121205"},"modified":"2025-09-25T12:50:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T02:50:13","slug":"st-mary-of-the-angels-to-host-windfire-music-festivals-world-class-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/st-mary-of-the-angels-to-host-windfire-music-festivals-world-class-program\/","title":{"rendered":"St Mary of the Angels to host Windfire Music Festival&#8217;s world-class program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOR Windfire Music Festival&#8217;s 16th year, local and international performers will fill the historic Basilica of St Mary of the Angels from October 3 to October 12.<\/p>\n<p>Music at the Basilica&#8217;s secretary Jane Bashiruddin described the festival as &#8220;a fabulous feast of music&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Tom Healey, the Vox Angelica Geelong Chamber Choir will open the ten-day program with bird-inspired performance The Saddest Sound, the Sweetest Sound.<\/p>\n<p>The choir will perform fifteen compositions, two of which were composed by choir-member and Geelong local Michael Hannan.<\/p>\n<p>The title of the performance is derived from Christopher Tin&#8217;s The Saddest Noise, which described the birdsong of early spring as &#8220;the saddest noise, the sweetest noise, the maddest noise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/ConductorandChoir_33575.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Opening the festival is Vox Angelica Geelong Chamber Choir\u2019s bird-inspired performance &#8220;The Saddest Sound, the Sweetest Sound&#8221;. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following this, Australian musicians Greg Dikmans and David MacFarlane will present Music For a Mixed Taste, an exploration of 17th and 18th century European music styles.<\/p>\n<p>To close the first weekend pianist Sonoka Miyake will join Oc\u00e9anique&#8217;s Oliver Bonnici on violin, Jenny Ingram on viola, and Siobhan O&#8217;Shaughnessy on cello for E Flat Major Through the Centuries.<\/p>\n<p>On October 10, festivities will continue with Then, Now.<\/p>\n<p>Described by Bashiruddin as &#8220;an immersion of soul and space&#8221;, the performance will feature compositions from the 12th to the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>For the second choral concert of the festival, The Australian Boys Choir will join The Vocal Consort on October 11 to perform a program of French classics.<\/p>\n<p>To close the 2025 Wildfire Festival on October 12 is Four Saxophones: A Harmonious Journey Through Time, performed by the AXES quartet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/09\/AXES_33593.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"423\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">International saxophone quartet, AXES, will close the 2025 Windfire Music Festival on October 12.
