LOCAL figures will come together at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre on Thursday, October 9 for a symposium on the region’s heritage.<\/p>\n

Held in partnership with the Geelong Branch of the National Trust, Honouring the Past \u2013 Creating the Future will feature guest speakers who will share stories of their own on the heritage of Geelong’s built environment.<\/p>\n

Moderated by National Wool Museum director Padraic Fisher, the conversations will focus on what heritage means for existing structures, what is being created, infusing life into new buildings and more.<\/p>\n

Event organiser and Geelong Branch of the National Trust secretary Linda Carr said one of the main reasons for holding the event is because the people of Geelong care about the heritage.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got a rich heritage and yet it’s changing very quickly.<\/p>\n

“We want to bring people together to hear contemporary views about what heritage means, what is the future of heritage in Geelong, what kind of heritage is there.”<\/p>\n

Across three hours, attendees will hear from a range of personalities including City of Greater Geelong heritage project officer Benjamin Petkov, who has completed heritage assessments for new inclusions.<\/p>\n

Hamilton Group managing director Cameron Hamilton, who is known for transforming heritage properties around the region, will also speak about reimagining heritage of Geelong.<\/p>\n

The Sharp Group co-owner and director Lyndsay Sharp, who heads up some of the most well-known venues in the region, including Flying Brick Cider Co, Leura Park Estate and Curlewis Golf Club, will join the discussions.<\/p>\n

Heritage advisor and university deputy Melinda Kennedy and Professor Tuba Kocaturk will also take part in the October event.<\/p>\n

Ms Carr said she hopes people will walk away with an understanding that action is needed to preserve history.<\/p>\n

“All of us, with our different view…need to work together.<\/p>\n

“Heritage has a role in sustainability. Instead of knocking these old buildings down and throwing it into the landfill, we can reuse it in an interesting and innovative and appealing way.”<\/p>\n

The event is being held in partnership with the Geelong Branch of the National Trust, which works to conserve and protect the heritage for future generations.<\/p>\n
