{"id":121686,"date":"2025-10-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=121686"},"modified":"2025-10-02T11:27:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T01:27:13","slug":"diving-into-the-world-of-barwon-water-with-wade-the-tardigrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/diving-into-the-world-of-barwon-water-with-wade-the-tardigrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Diving into the world of Barwon Water with &#8216;Wade the Tardigrade&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A THREE-metre puppet, &#8216;Wade the Tardigrade&#8217;, will be roaming the city this October for ROAM Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>The giant tardigrade, created by Geelong puppeteer Georgie Rose for Barwon Water, will be unveiled during the one-day arts event, to be held on October 11 in Geelong&#8217;s cultural precinct.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most resilient creatures on earth, the tardigrade \u2013 also affectionately known as the &#8216;water bear&#8217; \u2013 is a critical component in the treatment of wastewater, helping produce clean, recycled water.<\/p>\n<p>Elisa Hunter, Barwon Water&#8217;s general manager of customers, community and strategy, said &#8216;Wade the Tardigrade&#8217; has been created as a way for Barwon Water to connect with the community in an entertaining manner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We love creatively engaging with our communities and bringing elements of our water systems to life in fun and entertaining ways,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Georgie has taken a creature that is measured in millimetres and created a fantastic representation that celebrates the weird and wonderful world of our sewers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/Wade1_54287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barwon Water\u2019s Museum of Modern (f)Art will be open for ROAM Geelong, visitors can explore the museum, attend workshops, and parade with Wade in Johnstone Park. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Rose, who has been making puppets for over 10 years said &#8216;Wade the Tardigrade&#8217; is &#8220;possibly the strangest&#8221; puppet she has ever made.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The puppets that I usually make are quite small-scale; normally you&#8217;re shrinking down into miniature worlds,&#8221; she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has been a different experience \u2013 taking something microscopic and making it massive. It has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fittingly, Ms Wade said a lot of the parts for Wade were sourced in the plumbing section of hardware stores.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is irrigation, pipes, plumbing fixtures and even pool noodles,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/Wade2_54276.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Wade the Tardigrade\u2019 will be on display on October 11 for ROAM Geelong. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next weekend, Geelong&#8217;s cultural heart \u2013 from Johnstone Park to Little Malop Street \u2013 will be transformed into a day and night experience of theatre, art, light and sound.<\/p>\n<p>As part of ROAM Geelong, Barwon Water&#8217;s popular Museum of Modern (f)Art will open its doors.
