THE City of Greater Geelong will move ahead with the sale of a former Meals on Wheels distribution centre, after determining the property is no longer suitable for community use.<\/p>\n
The 655sqm site at 59 Bacchus March Road, Corio has been vacant since February 2022, when the Meals on Wheels service shifted to a centralised model.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the city was committed to ensuring public assets deliver “real value”.<\/p>\n
“We’re carefully considered the future of this site and determined that it no longer meets the needs of our services or the community,” he said.<\/p>\n
City officers have determined that the Bacchus March Road building’s classification and limited size offers little potential for other community uses.<\/p>\n
It is also not considered feasible for upgrade or repurposing.<\/p>\n
Cr Andrew Katos, chair of the council’s planning portfolio, said the sale would allow the city to reinvest in more suitable facilities.<\/p>\n
“This site has served its purpose, and it’s time to look ahead to better ways of supporting our community.”<\/p>\n
Community consultation on the sale ran between June and July, with only four submissions received.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
