{"id":122263,"date":"2025-10-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=122263"},"modified":"2025-10-15T17:43:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T06:43:00","slug":"all-fun-and-games-for-the-geelong-west-toy-library-marks-40th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/all-fun-and-games-for-the-geelong-west-toy-library-marks-40th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"All fun and games for the Geelong West Toy Library Marks 40th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GENERATIONS of families have borrowed toys from the Geelong West Toy Library over its 40-year history \u2014 a milestone the group will celebrate with a &#8216;stay and play&#8217; event on Saturday, October\u202f18.<\/p>\n<p>Bridgette Salamy, Geelong West Toy Library&#8217;s President, said the 40th anniversary will be a joyful occasion for families and volunteers alike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our 40th celebration will have potion-making, face painting, a ball pit, giant games, toys, balloons, and a raffle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bridgette has been involved with the Toy Library since 2022 and manages much of its daily operations.<\/p>\n<p>From purchasing toys to managing volunteers, Bridgette works hard to keep the library running smoothly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/IMG_1553_46139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"801\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While her role keeps her busy, it&#8217;s one she cherishes. &#8220;I love everything about it. My girls have basically grown up at the toy library. When new toys arrive, it&#8217;s like Christmas every day for my girls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, she attended the Toy Libraries Australia conference in Perth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I learned so much and connected with other toy libraries,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong West Toy Library has served the local community since the 1980s and remains at its long-time home in Virginia\u202fHall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My husband&#8217;s family was involved in the toy library back in the early &#8217;90s,&#8221; Bridgette said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of the toys on our shelves are the same ones my husband played with as a kid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although its core mission remains the same, the library has adapted to changing times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve managed to survive through COVID, which was a very tough time for toy libraries,&#8221; Bridgette said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We currently have 170\u202fmembers, each borrowing 4\u202fto\u202f8\u202ftoys at a time \u2013 saving families hundreds of dollars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The library is also working on inclusivity, with staff recently completing sunflower hidden disability training.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope to open quiet borrowing sessions in the New Year,&#8221; Bridgette said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/IMG_2217_46070.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"739\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There will be many play stations to enjoy during the anniversary celebration at Virginia Hall, including the roller coaster!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Toy libraries in our region are doing incredible work, especially in disability advocacy, and inspire us to aim higher.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Bridgette hopes more families across Geelong and the surrounding areas can benefit from toy libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d love to see toy libraries expanding to areas such as Whittington, Lara and North\u202fGeelong,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>To families considering borrowing from the toy library, she wanted them to know &#8220;you&#8217;re not going to get in trouble if you break or lose a piece \u2013 that&#8217;s part of borrowing toys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Families can also experience the library at the upcoming stay and play celebration, where children and families get to play with the toys in the library.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/IMG_5342_46180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"548\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One former volunteer is coming back to paint faces at this years&#8217;s stay and play.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s worth coming in to see how great it is and how much joy it brings to families,&#8221; Bridgette said.<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong West Toy Library&#8217;s &#8217;40th Anniversary Stay and Play&#8217; will run on Saturday, October 18, with two sessions, at 9.45am and 10.30am.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many fun activities at the upcoming &#8216;stay and play&#8217; will be a ball pit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GENERATIONS of families have borrowed toys from the Geelong West Toy Library over its 40-year history \u2014 a milestone the group will celebrate with a &#8216;stay and play&#8217; event on Saturday, October\u202f18.
