{"id":122504,"date":"2025-10-20T11:31:02","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T00:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=122504"},"modified":"2025-10-20T11:31:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T00:31:02","slug":"eastern-beach-safety-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/eastern-beach-safety-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"Major safety changes coming to Eastern Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong has announced several changes at the Eastern Beach precinct, including at the children&#8217;s pool, diving boards, and lifeguard hours of operation, ahead of summer.<\/p>\n<p>There were 50 drowning fatalities in the municipality between 2004 and 2024, representing more than triple the average of Victorian local government areas, and Life Saving Victoria identifies the Eastern Beach precinct as a high-risk area and &#8220;drowning blackspot&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action is land manager of the site and requested the city, as operator, to investigate short-term and long-term actions to improve safety.<\/p>\n<p>The city announced today (Monday, October 20) its safety and management review made several recommendations including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continue lifeguard supervision of the children\u2019s pool and promenade from November to mid-April<\/li>\n<li>Re-open the children\u2019s pool unsupervised from mid-April to October and overnight, with additional safety measures available such as an automatic external defibrillator, extra signage, more rescue equipment and an emergency marker. This will see the children\u2019s pool return to being open year-round<\/li>\n<li>Continue the use of the rolling drum diving apparatuses as they\u2019re assessed as safe and suitable for ongoing use<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen the structure of the central pontoon and undertake safety works to the viewing platform and decking<\/li>\n<li>Undertake safety works on the diving tower with consideration to the roof structure, hand rails and structure integrity, and<\/li>\n<li>Permanently decommission all four diving boards (including the two that were decommissioned for the 2024-25 season) due to ongoing safety risks and unsafe swimmer behaviours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lifeguard supervision hours have also been updated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12 noon to 5pm on weekends only between November 1 and December 21<\/li>\n<li>10am to 5pm (pool) and 11am to 7pm (dive tower) every day between December 21 and February 28, 2026<\/li>\n<li>12 noon to to 5pm weekends only between March 1, 2026 to March 30, 2026, and<\/li>\n<li>12 noon to 5pm every day during the Easter school holidays from April 5, 2026 to April 19, 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The precinct welcomes more than 250,000 visitors each summer.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the city was committed to actioning all recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recommendations are informed by significant research, including safety and structural integrity reviews, workshops with LSV and Royal Life Saving Australia, a report on the precinct\u2019s drowning profile and feedback from \u2018Community Conversation\u2019 sessions with an early morning swimming group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that there will be community members who have enjoyed using the diving boards over the years and will be disappointed by their permanent closure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognise and understand their frustration; however, we won\u2019t waver on protecting the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese incoming changes and investigations will ensure that the Eastern Beach precinct is a safer place for swimmers of all skill levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chair of the council&#8217;s sports and recreation portfolio Cr Eddy Kontelj said the external reclassification of the children\u2019s pool from &#8220;open waterway&#8221; to &#8220;pool&#8221; and additional safety requirements meant the city had to close the pool when it was unsupervised late last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thank the community and stakeholders for sharing their feedback and patience as we worked to ensure our youngest community members were protected when using the children\u2019s pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that we have more safety measures being implemented for the upcoming summer season, we\u2019re excited to re-open the children\u2019s pool year-round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am positive the community will be thrilled with this, including quite a number of local athletes and sports clubs who reached out to us advising that they use the pool regularly for rehabilitation purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong has announced several changes at the Eastern Beach precinct, including at the children&#8217;s pool, diving boards, and lifeguard hours of operation, ahead of summer.
