RECENTLY, I bought a new phone. Not quite the “dumb phone” we’re starting to hear about, but certainly not the all-singing, all-notifying device I’d been used to.<\/p>\n

It’s modern, quick, and functional, but a little simpler. I’m not here to rant about technology. I love tech. My MacBook and iPad are both close at hand. But over time, my phone had started to feel more intrusive, constantly asking for my attention, and quietly costing me more than I realised.<\/p>\n

What I didn’t expect, however, was that this new phone would help improve my bank balance. It still has the little NFC chip that allows tap-and-go payments, but in this case, the makers haven’t activated it yet. The result? I now carry my wallet again. And, perhaps more significantly, I can’t check my bank balance at the tap of a screen.<\/p>\n

At first, that felt inconvenient. But over the past month, I’ve realised something: that tiny bit of friction has completely changed the way I spend.<\/p>\n

Most of us run a simple “spending account” system. We transfer a set amount in, tell ourselves it’s for the week, and four days later, we’re topping it up again. How often have you been in line at the cafe, quickly checked your balance, and moved a few dollars across before tapping your phone to pay?<\/p>\n

I was doing exactly that, constantly smoothing over the edges of my budget with instant top-ups. Now, without that convenience, I’m far more aware. I need to know my balance before I head out. I think about what I’ll spend before I spend it. And that small pause, that gap between impulse and action, has been a game-changer.<\/p>\n

That bit of friction has also made me more deliberate in other ways. I’m eating out less, buying fewer snacks, and not reaching for the easy option quite so often. The result? Better financial health and, funnily enough, better physical health too.<\/p>\n

For those interested, my new phone is the Light Phone 3. It’s not perfect, but neither are we. And that’s OK. What it has done is made me more conscious, not just of how I spend my money, but of how often my technology has quietly taken control of it.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, a little less “smart” might just make us a little more aware, and in a world built for speed and convenience, a little friction might just be the smartest financial tool we have.<\/p>\n
